DMK Burger

Last Friday, a couple girlfriends and I decided to grab a quick  bite. We were in the mood for a larger than life, juicy burger. We're all new to the Chicago area, but we had all heard good things about DMK Burger. Anyone who likes statistics will tell you that people my age (22- we're often referred to as Millennials) will take the recommendation of a friend more seriously than if Bobby Flay himself recommended somewhere. So we had no doubt in our decision to try out DMK.

Our first impression before even stepping inside was how easy the restaurant was to get to. As car-less, CTA-dependent women who are often in heels, we loved that it was across the street from the Brown Line stop at Wellington. Once inside, the place had a nice, slightly upscale bar feel. For a Friday night at 7pm, the 25 minute wait was perfectly reasonable. It doesn't hurt that their food can  come out incredibly quickly due to the simplicity of the menu either.

My two friends and I each ordered different burgers. I chose the patty topped with bleu cheese, chili-spiced onion straws and spicy ketchup. As everything at DMK is a la carte, we also ordered fries for the table. The nice thing about their fries is that you can order them for one person or for three. Since all of the different seasonings and toppings sounded worthy of our stomachs, we ordered two different small orders. The final decision was tough, but we decided to forego the truffle parmesan and opted for sea salt and black pepper and the fries topped with cheddar cheese sauce and scallions.

Our food came out quickly, which was much appreciated after the wait to be seated. The burgers looked and smelled phenomenal and they were piled high with the gourmet toppings. My first bite was a piece of beef I snagged off the side because it looks too deliciously caramelized not to eat right away. Biting into the burger itself, I was thrilled to find that the patty was thin enough to get a little crispy on the outside, but the skilled chef managed to keep the inside pink. I've never had a burger that thin served at an actual medium temperature. It was a welcome surprise. My topping choices left nothing to crave. The onion straws were crispy and lent great flavor, the bleu cheese was tangy and had a cooling effect against the perfect amount of grease in the burger, and the ketchup offered that sweet note that always makes ketchup a burger's perfect compliment. It had a nice little kick to it as well. Also to note, was the bun itself. I'm not even sure what type of bread it was, but it was noticeably soft without ever getting soggy.

Then it was time to try the french fries. The sea salt and pepper fries were done to a perfect crunchy, crisp and expertly seasoned. Unfortunately, the one misstep of the meal was the cheese fries which came out cold. Nothing can quite bring a meal down like cold cheese sauce and room temperature french fries. But to DMK's credit, they were super accommodating, apologized and brought us a fresh order. The sauce ended up being a little too rich for my tastes, but the two small orders of fries worked out perfectly for the three of us. We all happily and easily polished off our burgers and the fries. I'd say we did so in a lady like manner, but let's face it, it didn't probably didn't look that way to the other guests.

The real cherry on top was when the bill came out to ten dollars a piece including tax and tip. Oh DMK, you're definitely on our good list. We'll be back!
